How can i use ”mektense” suffix in Turkish?

Why do we sometimes use the suffix ”mektense” and sometimes ”maktansa”?

1️⃣ Film izlemektense _______________________.
(kitap okumak – to read a book)
✅ Instead of watching a movie, I prefer reading a book.

2️⃣ Araba kullanmaktansa _______________________.
(yürümek – to walk)
✅ Rather than driving, I prefer to walk.
