Başarılı Bir Gün 

Dün Türkçe çalışmak için kütüphaneye gittim. Kitap seçerken bir arkadaşımı gördüm. Bana yaklaştı ve “Merhaba! Ne okuyorsun?” diye sordu. Ben de “Türkçe öğreniyorum,” diye cevapladım.

Sonra birlikte kahve içmek için kafeye gittik. Orada bana İstanbul’da yapılacak şeyleri anlattı. Ben de notlar aldım çünkü gelecek ay İstanbul’u ziyaret edeceğim.

Şimdi evdeyim ve bugün öğrendiğim yeni kelimeleri tekrar ediyorum. Yarın da öğretmenimle bu konuları konuşacağım. Türkçe her gün biraz daha gelişiyor ve bu beni çok mutlu ediyor!

English Translation:

A Successful Day

Yesterday, I went to the library to study Turkish. While choosing a book, I saw a friend. He approached me and asked, “Hello! What are you reading?” I replied, “I’m learning Turkish.”

Then, we went to a café to drink coffee. There, he told me about things to do in Istanbul. I took notes because I will visit Istanbul next month.

Now I’m at home, and I’m reviewing the new words I learned today. Tomorrow, I will discuss these topics with my teacher. My Turkish is improving every day, and this makes me very happy!

1. Why is the “-mak” suffix used in “Türkçe çalışmak için”?
Answer:
In Turkish, when two verbs appear together in a sentence, the first verb typically takes the infinitive form (“-mek/-mak”). Here, “çalışmak” is in the infinitive because it explains the purpose (“to study”). The second verb “gittim” is already conjugated in the past tense (“I went”).

2. Why is the “-erken” suffix used in “kitap seçerken”?
Answer:
The “-erken/-arken” suffix is used to mean “while doing [verb].” Since the last vowel in “seç” is “e,” we use “-erken” (“seçerken”). If “-arken” were mistakenly used (“seçarken”), it would only be a pronunciation error, but people would still understand.

3. In “kahve içmek için gittik,” why are there two verbs (“içmek” and “gittik”)?
Answer:
The first verb, “içmek” (to drink), is in the infinitive form because it expresses the purpose (“to drink coffee”). The second verb, “gittik” (we went), is conjugated in the past tense to indicate the action that happened.

4. What does the “-diğim” suffix mean in “bugün öğrendiğim”?
Answer:
The “-diğim” suffix turns the verb into a relative clause meaning “that I learned.” So, “öğrendiğim kelimeler” = “the words (that) I learned.” It connects the action (learning) to the noun (words).
