When approaching a supervisor in Turkey, starting with conditional softeners or indirect statements makes your request sound professional and non-demanding:
- Müsaitseniz… (If you are available…): The standard polite door-opener before starting a conversation with a manager.
- …görüşmek istedim (I wanted to discuss…): Using the past tense (istedi-m) instead of the present tense softens the request, making it sound more humble and respectful.
- …onaylar mısınız? (Would you approve?): Utilizes the Aorist tense (-ar) for polite question structures.
2. Providing Reasons & Intentions (Gerekçe ve Plan Bildirme)
To justify a leave request during a busy period, corporate Turkish relies on specific connectors and planning structures:
- …olduğu için (Because it is / Due to…): Used to state a solid cause or reason directly before the conclusion (e.g., teslim dönemi olduğu için = because it is the delivery period).
- …planlıyorum (I am planning to…): Combines the verb root with the compound planning structure to show clear foresight.
- Yoğun olduğunu biliyorum ama… (I know it is busy, but…): Showing empathy toward the company’s workload before proposing your counter-need makes your argument much more persuasive.
