Basic Turkish Grammar Suffixes Explained
How to Use the Turkish Origin Suffix (-li / -lı / -lu / -lü)?
💡 Note: Replace "İstanbul" with your own city or country name when practicing!
İstanbul + -lu + -y- + -um = İstanbulluyum
- Origin Suffix (-lu): Since the last vowel in the word "İstanbul" is U, vowel harmony dictates that we add -lu (meaning 'from').
- Personal Suffix (-um): After adding -lu, the new last vowel is still U, so the 1st person singular suffix ('I am') becomes -um.
- Buffer Letter (-y-): In Turkish, two vowels (
u+u) cannot sit next to each other, so a buffer consonant "y" is automatically inserted between them.
Turkish Personal Pronouns: How to Say I, You, He/She in Turkish
💡 Mastering these 6 personal pronouns and their corresponding suffixes is key to constructing natural sentences in Turkish!
Notice how the verb suffix changes based on the subject pronoun:
- Ben İstanbul'da yaşıyorum. (I live in Istanbul.)
- Sen İstanbul'da yaşıyorsun. (You live in Istanbul.)
- O İstanbul'da yaşıyor. (He/She lives in Istanbul - zero suffix!)
How to Ask Questions in Turkish with Suffixes (-mu / -mı)?
Bil- (know) + -iyor (present cont.) + mu- (question particle) + -sun (you)
In Turkish, the question particle (mu / mi / mı / mü) is written separately from the main verb stem, while the personal suffix (-sun = you) attaches directly to the question particle!
